View from the Window at St Mildred's Bay

Project Type

Cyanotype

Date

2021 +

Location

Westgate on Sea

An on-going observational project, creating in-camera cyanotype prints of the view from the window at St Mildred’s Bay, Westgate on Sea.
Each print is 24mm x 36mm in size, printed onto cartridge paper, watercolour paper and tracing paper. This is an ongoing project inspired by “The View from the Window at Le Gras” By Joseph Niepce in 1827. Each image requires long exposures of 1-4 days. The project is a slow, observational process which results in a negative, mirrored image of the view from the window. When tracing paper is coated with cyanotype solution, the same process can be follwed to create a translucent negative. The image is now reproducible, much like a traditional 35mm negative and can be enlarged in the darkroom to create further prints.
